Birthday Party for Buddha
Buddhism in Korea is rooted in the pursuit of enlightenment and spiritual practice, yet it has also evolved into a distinctive part of everyday culture. Even people who do not identify as Buddhists often visit temples to pray for good health, success, or the well-being of their families. Temples are not only places of worship but also cultural landmarks, public spaces, and places for rest and reflection.
These characteristics become especially visible during Yeondeunghoe, the annual Lotus Lantern Festival celebrating the Buddha’s birthday. The lantern parade passes through Dongdaemun, one of Seoul’s largest commercial and tourist districts, where religious ritual, urban life, commerce, and tourism naturally overlap.
한국의 불교는 수행과 깨달음을 중요하게 여기는 종교이지만, 오랜 시간 한국 사회와 함께하며 독자적인 문화를 형성해 왔다. 불교를 믿지 않는 사람들도 시험이나 취업, 가족의 건강처럼 삶의 중요한 순간에 사찰을 찾아 기도를 올리며, 사찰은 종교시설인 동시에 문화유산이자 일상의 휴식 공간으로도 받아들여진다.
이러한 한국 불교의 모습은 부처님의 탄생을 기념하는 연등회에서도 자연스럽게 드러난다. 연등행렬은 서울의 대표적인 관광상업지구인 동대문을 지나며 종교 행사인 동시에 수많은 시민과 관광객이 함께하는 도시의 축제가 된다.
Throughout the series, the lantern procession, commercial signs, architecture, participants, and spectators appear together within the frame. Their relationships reveal a portrait of contemporary Korea, where different values and ways of seeing the world quietly coexist.
What drew me to this scene was not the festival itself, but the relationships created within it. Symbols of Buddhism move through streets filled with advertisements and shopping malls. Devout Buddhists, casual visitors, tourists, and passersby all share the same space, each experiencing the event in different ways.
The photographs explore how tradition and modernity, spirituality and consumer culture, belief and everyday life can exist simultaneously within the same landscape.
사진에는 연등행렬뿐 아니라 상업 간판과 도시의 배경, 참가자와 관람객이 함께 등장한다. 각각의 요소는 하나의 프레임 안에서 새로운 관계를 만든다.
불교의 상징들이 거대한 광고와 상업 공간 사이를 지나고, 신앙을 가진 사람과 그렇지 않은 사람들이 같은 공간에서 같은 행렬을 바라본다. 전통과 현대, 종교와 소비, 신앙과 일상이 서로 충돌하기보다 하나의 도시 풍경 안에서 자연스럽게 공존하고 있다.
